Description

Discovered by Dr. William Jack in 1819,  Nepenthes Rafflesiana is an extremely variable species with a wide distribution across Borneo, Malaysia, Singapore and Sumatra. It can be found growing in peaty swamps and ocean cliff sides at elevations below 1,200 meters (3,900 feet).  The pitchers can range from deep maroon to almost white, with and without speckles. Nepenthes rafflesiana produces tubby pitchers with large wings on very long tendrils. A quick growing species that can easily reach two feet or more across. Rafflesiana is a  lowland species so it thrives with Hot, humid days and warm nights.

Nepenthes are primarily native to Southeast Asia.  There are roughly 180 species, with many recently discovered in the 20th century. They grow anywhere from hot, sticky jungles to chill mountain tops high above the clouds. Tho Nepenthes were once thought to be difficult to grow, this is far from the truth. Most plants have adapted to cultivation quite well and the hobby is growing quickly. In fact, most tropical pitcher plants species and hybrids will thrive indoors between 60 and85 degrees Fahrenheit.
