Nepenthes ampullaria – Typical

N. ampullaria is named from the Latin word ampulla meaning ‘flask’. This lowland species has a wide distribution throughout Malaysia,  Indonesia, Brunei, Malaysia, and Papua New Guinea.  Its a very popular lowland plant with very distinct features.  Nepenthes ampullaria is partially detritivores, which rely on falling leaf litter as nutrients. There are many color varieties that range from lime green to black.  This Nepenthes ampullaria – green, speckled thrives with Hot, humid days and warm nights.

This plant prefers lowland conditions.  It should be kept between 84-90F, with nights no lower than 65F.  Nepenthes can acclimate to lower humidity levels, although the best results will be seen with a relative humidity of around 80%. Bright, indirect light and pure water.

Nepenthes are primarily native to Southeast Asia.  There are roughly 180 species, with many recently discovered in the 20th century. They grow anywhere from hot, sticky jungles to chill mountain tops high above the clouds. Tho Nepenthes were once thought to be difficult to grow, this is far from the truth. Most plants have adapted to cultivation quite well and the hobby is growing quickly. In fact, most tropical pitcher plant species and hybrids will thrive indoors between 60 and85 degrees Fahrenheit.
