Lycopodium squarrosum (Huperzia squarrosa) XL

$89.00

Lycopodium squarrosum is a very cool plant! They can be found growing in Thailand, Madagascar, Australia, China, Indonesia, Micronesia, Taiwan, Fiji and Malaysia. They also go by the name Huperzia squarrosa, rock tassel fern, and club moss. These rarely seen for sale at this size, especially with this many growth points. They make great specimens for the Nepenthes greenhouse or large terrarium, but prefer a little more shade. They require an open epiphytic mix with even moisture and high humidity. They can probably handle more light on the cooler west coast climates. We wouldn’t pass this one up.

XL specimens with 2+ growth points. Shipped with rootball carefully wrapped in sphagnum.

Warm to cool Tropical conditions. High humidity and even moisture. Partial-full shade.

Description

Lycopodium squarrosum is closely related to ferns and mosses. It also goes by the name rock tassel fern or club moss and is now classified into a subgenus called Huperzia.  This species grows as an epiphyte and can be found growing in Thailand, Madagascar, Australia, China, Indonesia, Micronesia, Taiwan, Fiji and Malaysia. They prefer warm to cool conditions, but won’t tolerate frost. Lycopodium squarrosum makes a great specimen in the Nepenthes collection.

There are so many plants that enjoy the same conditions as Nepenthes, most  love high humidity and bright indirect light. Aroids, bromeliads, ferns and orchids are just a few companion plants for Nepenthes. We love adding bromeliads between our tropical pitcher plants for a burst of color and texture! They also look nice mounted on driftwood. Ferns add a softness to the environment and really make the colorful pitchers stand out. Aroids add bizarre leaf shapes and orchids make great conversation pieces! The list goes on! Our collection has grown significantly over the years and we regularly take divisions from some of our favorite gems.  Adding these treasures to your collection can really elevate the aesthetic of your grow space and allow you to enjoy it even more. We have been multiplying some of our companion plants and they will be available here from time to time.
